Basics about Knee Pain
It Never Pays to Wait
Only numbing the symptoms of knee pain can mean what could have taken a simple round of treatments to heal eventually becomes much more chronic.
Some Common Causes of Knee Pain
Knee pain is often caused by bone misalignments and muscle imbalances around the knee. Injury, bad posture, and repetitive use are often the culprits. A chiropractor uses chiropractic adjustments to realign the joints, eliminating joint stress and thus relieving pain. Some of the common causes of these misalignments are:
Ligament Injuries
Sometimes a person’s ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) becomes strained, causing severe pain. The ACL is sometimes stretched or torn during a direct or sudden impact, such as a football tackle or car accident.
Arthritis
The knee joint is generally most affected by arthritis, but the condition can also affect other structures such as tendons, ligaments, and muscles. This can be either in the form of:
Osteoarthritis – causes the gradual degradation of joint cartilage.
Rheumatoid arthritis – cause joints to become inflamed often also causing damage to surrounding cartilage.
Meniscus Injuries
A quick rotation or twist of the upper let or repetitive rotations of the knee can cause tearing of cushion in your joints called meniscus.
Illiotibial Band Syndrome
Tendon inflammation, along with its the subsequent rubbing of the outer knee bone is often the result of the stress caused by overuse without leaving time to heal. Symptoms can include a burning sensation at the side of the knee, aches, and pain that radiates up to the side of one’s thigh.
Osgood-Schlatter Disease
A condition caused by tension or repetitive stress on the upper tibia. Pre-adolescent boys who are involved in sports that include frequent jumping or running are most prone to this painful condition.
Tendon Injuries
Can be caused by anything from tendonitis to a torn tendon.
Knee Cartilage Injuries
Chondromalacia patellae, or a softening of the knee cap, is most often experienced by runners, cyclists, skiers, and soccer players.
