Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Woman with back pain from bad ergonomics.

No matter what you do for a living, your posture and workplace ergonomics affect how you feel physically. Sometimes, the effects of what you do don’t show up for months or years, but eventually, they do catch up. If you’ve been dealing with back pain
or neck pain, it may be from your posture and workplace ergonomics. At Cleveland Chiropractic and Massage, serving Garner, Cleveland, Clayton, 40/42 area, Willow Springs, Four Oaks, and Angier, NC, we can help. Dr. Moran will guide you on how to
fix your posture and avoid recurring pain.

Workplace Setup

Ergonomics are about more than just having a comfy chair. The chair needs to be at a height that allows you to look at your computer or desk at eye level. Your feet need to reach the floor, and your legs should be bent so that your knees are at a 90-degree
angle. You don’t have to sit in this position all day, but you should be able to come back to this position easily when you sit down.

Anything you work on, such as filing papers, needs to be at a height that allows you to either stand up straight or sit normally in a chair. Don’t try to do things while bending over at the waist, as that can place too much stress on your back.

Proper Posture

If you have to lift and carry something, it needs to be at a weight you can handle, and you need to lift with your knees. Do not bend over at the waist to grab the item and lift with your back. While sitting in a chair, it is important not to slouch
your shoulders. Poor posture takes a toll on the body and will lead to neck and back pain.
